The five rail services at Hoboken

Morris & Essex Lines

Newark Broad Street, the Oranges, Summit, Morristown, and out to Hackettstown — including the Gladstone Branch through the Somerset Hills. Note that many M&E trains run as Midtown Direct to NY Penn instead of Hoboken; check the destination.

Main / Bergen County Lines

Up through Secaucus, Rutherford, Garfield, and Paterson (Main) or Rutherford, Hackensack area, and Ridgewood (Bergen County), converging toward Suffern.

Pascack Valley Line

Secaucus, then the string of Bergen County towns — Emerson, Westwood, Hillsdale — to Spring Valley, NY.

Montclair-Boonton Line

Through Newark Broad Street and the six Montclair stations, out toward Denville, Dover, and (limited service) Hackettstown. Like the M&E, some trains run Midtown Direct instead.

Port Jervis Line (Metro-North, operated by NJ Transit)

Metro-North's west-of-Hudson service to Orange County, NY — Harriman, Middletown, Port Jervis — runs on NJ Transit rails and crews via the Main/Bergen route. Metro-North tickets, NJ Transit trains.

Reaching NY Penn: the Secaucus transfer

The question every visitor asks: which train goes to Manhattan? From Hoboken, none of them. The terminal is a stub end on the Jersey shore of the Hudson. To reach Penn Station New York by commuter rail:

Board any departing train — nearly all stop at Secaucus Junction, the first stop, minutes out.
At Secaucus, follow signs upstairs from the lower (Hoboken) level to the upper (Northeast Corridor) level.
Board any New York–bound train. Your ticket must cover the trip to New York — buy it that way from the start.
