Hoboken to NYC: Every Way Across the Hudson
Hoboken Terminal gives you four realistic ways into Manhattan — two PATH lines, two ferry routes, and a bus through the Lincoln Tunnel — plus one commuter-rail transfer most people should skip. Which one wins depends on where in Manhattan you’re going, and what time it is.

The short answer
Going to Midtown? PATH 33rd Street line — $3.25, about 14–20 minutes, up the Sixth Avenue spine with stops at Christopher, 9th, 14th, 23rd, and 33rd Streets. Going Downtown? PATH World Trade Center line — about 10–12 minutes, direct. After midnight? PATH, full stop — it’s the only option that runs 24/7. The ferry and the 126 bus both have real use cases, covered below, but for most trips the PATH is faster, cheaper, and more frequent than everything else.
One thing Hoboken can’t do: put you on a one-seat commuter train to Penn Station New York. NJ Transit trains from Hoboken stay in New Jersey — reaching NY Penn requires a transfer at Secaucus Junction, which is explained in the schedules guide.
The full comparison
| Mode | Cost | Time | Frequency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PATH — 33rd Street line | $3.25 | About 14–20 min to Midtown | Every 6–15 min; runs 24/7 | Midtown, Sixth Avenue corridor, late nights |
| PATH — World Trade Center line | $3.25 | About 10–12 min to WTC | Every 6 min at weekday rush; every 20 min weekends | Lower Manhattan, Financial District, Oculus connections |
| NY Waterway ferry — Brookfield Place | About $9.75 + fuel surcharge | About 11 min crossing | 7 days a week; check the app for the current timetable | Battery Park City, World Financial Center, the view |
| NY Waterway ferry — Midtown/W. 39th St | Similar per-route pricing — check the app | About 10–15 min crossing | Weekday commuter hours only from the terminal | Hudson Yards, Javits Center, far West Midtown |
| NJ Transit 126 bus | Roughly $4 (zone-based) | About 20–40 min depending on tunnel traffic | Frequent at rush; thinner off-peak | Port Authority, W. 42nd Street, uptown Hoboken pickups |
Fares as of mid-2026. NJ Transit raises all fares 3% every July 1, and the Port Authority has approved further PATH step increases — treat these as close, not gospel.
PATH: the default answer
The PATH station sits directly next to the terminal on Hudson Place — you can walk from an NJ Transit platform to a PATH turnstile in two or three minutes. Two lines leave Hoboken:
Hoboken → 33rd Street
Up the Sixth Avenue corridor: Christopher St, 9th St, 14th St, 23rd St, 33rd St. About 14–20 minutes end to end. 33rd Street puts you a block from Herald Square and the B/D/F/M/N/Q/R/W subways, and a short walk from Penn Station.
Hoboken → World Trade Center
Direct to the Oculus in about 10–12 minutes. Every 6 minutes at weekday rush under the 2026 service plan — and, for the first time since 2001, it runs on weekends too (every 20 minutes, roughly 10 a.m.–9 p.m.).
The fare is a flat $3.25 any distance, paid with SmartLink, TAPP contactless, or a single-ride ticket. Full details — overnight patterns, fare cards, where the entrance is — live in the PATH at Hoboken guide.
NY Waterway ferry: the scenic premium
Ferries load at the terminal’s restored 1907 slips — the same berths the Lackawanna Railroad’s boats used. Two routes leave from the Hoboken/NJ Transit Terminal landing:
- Brookfield Place (Battery Park City) — about an 11-minute crossing, 7 days a week, about $9.75 one-way plus a small fuel surcharge. The best option in this list for Lower Manhattan’s west side.
- Midtown/W. 39th Street — weekday commuter-hours service to the West Midtown Ferry Terminal at 39th Street, handy for Hudson Yards and the Javits Center. Free NY Waterway shuttle buses fan out across Midtown from the Manhattan side.
You pay roughly three times the PATH fare for the privilege, but the crossing itself is the best cheap boat ride in the region, and the free Manhattan shuttles claw back real value if your destination is on their routes. Full fares, passes, and the bikes-on-board rules are in the ferry guide.
The 126 bus: door-to-Port-Authority
The NJ Transit 126 runs from the rebuilt bus terminal at Hoboken Terminal up Washington Street, through the Lincoln Tunnel, and into Port Authority Bus Terminal at W. 42nd Street. The fare is a one-zone-plus-interstate fare of roughly $4. On a clear run it’s 20-something minutes; at rush hour the tunnel approach can double that, which is why commuters with a choice usually take the PATH.
The 126’s real advantage: it picks up along Washington Street the whole length of Hoboken, so if you live uptown it’s a one-seat ride without walking to the terminal at all. More on it — and every other route at the terminal — in the bus guide.
NJ Transit rail: not a way into Manhattan
Worth repeating, because visitors get burned by it: no NJ Transit commuter train from Hoboken crosses the Hudson. The tracks end at the river. If you need Penn Station New York specifically — say, for an Amtrak or LIRR connection — ride any Hoboken train one stop to Secaucus Junction and transfer upstairs to a New York–bound train. Budget 25–40 minutes all-in and a zone fare that exceeds the PATH’s $3.25.
For almost any other Manhattan destination, take the PATH to 33rd Street instead — it lands you a short walk from Penn Station anyway.
After midnight: PATH or a car, nothing else
The ferry docks for the night, the 126 thins out and stops, and NJ Transit trains dwindle. PATH is the only 24/7 link between Hoboken and Manhattan. Overnight (roughly late evening to early morning), the direct Hoboken lines are replaced by a combined Journal Square–33rd Street via Hoboken train, so Midtown is still a one-seat ride — just with 20–40 minute headways. Reaching the WTC side overnight means transferring, so build in slack.
Practical late-night advice: check the RidePATH app for the next departure before you leave the bar, because a just-missed overnight train is a long wait on an empty platform.
Which one should you take?
- Midtown / Herald Square / Penn Station: PATH 33rd Street line.
- Financial District / WTC / Oculus: PATH World Trade Center line.
- Battery Park City / Brookfield Place: the ferry — it docks right there.
- Hudson Yards / Javits / far West Side: ferry to W. 39th on a weekday; otherwise PATH to 33rd and walk or take the 7 train.
- Port Authority / a connecting bus: the 126.
- Anywhere, 2 a.m.: PATH. It’s not close.
Before you go: the terminal map shows where each mode boards, the schedules hub links every operator’s timetable, and if you have time to kill, here’s where to eat. Service changing? Check what’s new at the terminal.
Making it more than a day trip?
Hoboken hotels run cheaper than Manhattan's, and the PATH's 24/7 service means staying on this side of the river doesn't strand you. Compare rates near the terminal.
